The History of the Book (Virtual)
Thursday, January 197:00—8:15 PMZoom
From clay tablets, papyrus, and parchment/vellum, to paper and the bits and bytes of audiobooks and ebooks, join Amherst resident and former librarian, Susan Deschenes to learn about the history of the book. You’ll learn how papyrus reeds were transformed into papyrus, how much a handwritten parchment book cost to produce, and who invented paper. Did Johannes Gutenberg really invent printing? What is an incunabulum? How do books and the ideas they hold affect history?
After a career in high tech, Susan Deschenes served as a NH public librarian for more than 20 years. She loves the Amherst Town Library, and is constantly amazed at the range and depth of materials available there, through its website and from the network of GMILCs libraries.
