"The East Indian": A Conversation with Author Brinda Charry (In-Person)

Wednesday, November 297:00—8:00 PMMain Floor- Main Reading RoomAmherst Town Library14 Main Street, Amherst, NH, 03031

Brinda Charry's novel, "The East Indian" has been described as brilliant, highly imaginative and vivid, with memorable characters. It tells the story of Tony, a native of the Indian subcontinent who came to colonial America. It's a story of loss, love, and survival, that is also a story of the early years of the English settlement of Virginia.

In this presentation,  Charry will discuss the historical realities that inform her work and why it was important for her to tell this story of early colonial America. She will also talk about how the novel emerged from multiple points of intersection and engagement: her interest in history as well as fiction, her academic expertise as a Shakespearean and her practice as a writer of fiction, and her identity as an Indian who has lived in the United States for close to 25 years.

Brinda Charry came to the United States from India as a graduate student and has been living here since. She has published novels and a short-story collection in India and the UK. Her writing has won several awards and prizes. THE EAST INDIAN is her first novel to be published in the United States. Also a specialist in English Renaissance Literature (Shakespeare and contemporaries with a focus on race, cross-cultural engagement in the 1600s and 1700s, and the early history of globalization), she has published a number of books and articles in her field. She currently lives in Keene, New Hampshire.
