This presentation, sponsored by the Amherst Historical Society, will be a general overview of our postal history from the British Colonial Period through to present times. The focus will be on New Hampshire and Amherst. It will review why Amherst, New Hampshire had the second post office in our state. Some of the early developments in the U.S. Postal System started in New Hampshire. We will cover what impact the Postal System had on the development of New Hampshire and the United States, and how it became the largest postal system in the world in the 1800’s. The presentation will include many examples of old letters and covers from Amherst, and other towns in New Hampshire. These examples will be used to explain what postal history collectors look for when they study postal history and build their collection.
Presenter Howard Robinson has been collecting and studying Amherst Postal History for over 40 years, and is a member of the following organizations:
