Dave Whitney Trio will be playing a mixture of jazz standards and a few surprises. Performers and Composers featured include Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Bix Beiderbecke and Fats Waller to name a few.
Dave is from Billerica, Mass. Took up Trumpet in grade school and gravitated to Jazz and Big Band music thru records and Ray Smith's Jazz Decades radio show on WGBH Boston. Dave has led a jazz group since 1971 and formed his own Big Band in 1989.
Jon Wheatley grew up in Syracuse, New York and studied at Berklee College of Music. He is regarded as one of the Top Guitarists in Jazz today. Jon's influences include Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt and Barney Kessell. He is comfortable in styles ranging from Traditional to Swing and Modern Jazz. He teaches at Berklee and UMass/Lowell and has published a book, "Jazz Swing Guitar".
Mark Carlsen, Bass is from Minneapolis and attended Berklee. He worked for 3 1/2 years with the Tommy Dorsey Orch. directed by Buddy Morrow. His influences on Bass include Oscar Pettiford, Ray Brown, George Mraz and Dave Holland. Mark has taught at Phillips Exeter and runs his own Bass repair store, The Set Up shop.
The Winter Concert series with monthly musical events January through April is funded by the Friends of the Amherst Town Library.
