All Dressed Up: A History of Clothing Through Paintings (Virtual)

Thursday, May 187:00—8:30 PMZoom

Clothing is an essential no matter where you live. It tells us not only what people of a particular area needed to wear in their climate, but how clothing expressed social status. Clothing changes as culture changes - in color, texture, accessories, and complementary footwear. You’ll learn how paintings show you a person’s occupation, social status, and political or religious position. You’ll see how children’s clothing changed over time. We’ll look not just at how hats, clothing, accessories, and shoes reveal a way of life, but also how artists used techniques on canvas to show sheen, detail, and texture.

After many years of teaching classical languages, philosophy, and the history of ideas at Souhegan High School, presenter Nancy Baker now spends her time volunteering. She is immediate past Executive Chair of the Guild of Volunteers at the Currier Museum of Art and is an active docent there. Nancy gives talks on art, language and the history of ideas at the Currier, libraries, senior living enrichment programs, and community groups in the greater area. She is Chairman of the Amherst Library Board of Trustees and is an enthusiastic supporter of the role of the free library in communities.
